The digest
In a compelling episode of "Notes from the Edge," host Lisa Lacy sits down with Dr. Dean and HollyKem Sunseri, co-authors of "A Roadmap to the Soul: A Practical Guide to Love, Compassion, and Inner Peace." The Sunseris, who have been married for over 30 years and have decades of experience working with individuals, couples, and families, share their profound insights into emotional sobriety—a concept they define as Stage 2 recovery.
Sobriety vs. Emotional Sobriety
Lisa Lacy kicks off the conversation by asking for a clear distinction between sobriety and emotional sobriety. HollyKem explains that when someone successfully stops a substance or addictive behavior, whether it's drugs, gambling, or compulsive sex, the underlying emotional system often remains unchanged. "All of the emotions that we have been sedating all these years... that stuff starts to come to the surface," she notes. This is where the real work of emotional sobriety begins. Dr. Dean elaborates, stating that Stage 1 recovery is simply stopping the behavior—"putting the cork in the bottle." Stage 2, emotional sobriety, is about learning to "love that"—to embrace and manage the internalized emotions that were previously numbed.
