The digest
In a compelling episode of "Notes from the Edge," host Lisa Lacy sits down with Al Isaacs, author of the memoir "Finding Mary Smith," to discuss his extraordinary experience of discovering his adoption at 52 years old. What began as a routine phone call quickly unraveled a lifetime of secrets, forcing Al to confront his identity and the hidden narratives within his family.
The Unveiling: A Phone Call That Changed Everything
Al Isaacs, a comedian and improv teacher, was navigating a challenging period in his life. Both of his parents had been diagnosed with dementia, and his mother was battling cancer for the fifth time. As an only child, Al was juggling their complex health needs, which included his mother's increasingly "creative stories" to doctors due to her dementia. These stories ranged from fabricating surgeries to denying actual medical procedures, making it difficult for Al to manage their care. It was during this time, while working his web design job, that Al received a call from his mother's oncologist. The doctor was trying to get his mother's family medical history, but Al's mother kept hanging up on her. Al offered to help, suggesting the doctor call his parents' live-in nurse to act as an intermediary. However, his mother continued to intercept and terminate the calls.
Frustrated but determined to assist, Al offered to provide what family history he knew. It was then that the oncologist, assuming Al was already aware, casually dropped a bombshell: "Well, I need your mom and dad's family medical history. I don't need yours, since after all, you're adopted." Al's initial reaction was disbelief, even laughter, assuming it was just another one of his mother's dementia-fueled tales. He was an only child, and the idea of being adopted was completely foreign to him. He even joked with his boss about it, saying, "Hey, guess what, I'm adopted!" But the seed of doubt had been planted.
