The digest
Lisa Lacy welcomes Cathy Nesbitt, a health and wellness advocate, environmental innovator, entrepreneur, inspiring speaker, and founder of Cathy's Crawly Composters, established in 2002. Cathy is known as a passionate worm advocate who teaches people how to transform household organic waste into nutrient-rich soil through indoor vermicomposting. She believes worms will play an increasingly important role in waste management, soil production, and global food security. Cathy is also the founder of Cathy's Sprouters and Cathy's Laughter Club, bringing together what she calls "simple solutions for some of today's biggest challenges": worms for healthier soil, sprouts for accessible nutrition, and laughter for greater health. After encountering criticism and negative reactions to her unconventional mission, Cathy discovered laughter yoga, which became an essential part of her process. Now an award-winning entrepreneur, avid cyclist, and gardener, she uses education, workshops, and speaking to inspire people to live more sustainably, care for themselves, and discover the power of laughter.
The Genesis of the Worm Empire
Lisa kicks off the conversation by acknowledging Cathy's 20-year journey in building her "worm empire," despite facing initial criticism. Cathy, located just north of Toronto, Canada, explains that in 2002, the landfill for the Greater Toronto Area filled up. This created a significant problem because Canada, being the second-largest country in the world, couldn't find a new landfill site and had to start exporting its garbage to the United States. Cathy saw an opportunity to offer a solution: indoor composting with worms. Lisa, surprised by this revelation about Canada's waste management, asks why worms specifically. Cathy clarifies that composting is typically done outdoors, but her method involves worms in a box, making it suitable for indoor use. She emphasizes that it's a simple process of composting with worms, which can be done both indoors and outdoors.
