The digest
Lisa Lacy welcomes Ellie AuDHD Capstick, an ADHD educator, podcast host, and founder of Ellie AuDHD, to "Notes from the Edge." Ellie openly discusses the complexities of ADHD, autism, trauma, masking, burnout, relationships, and the everyday reality of being a late-diagnosed neurodivergent adult. She emphasizes presenting these experiences without sugarcoating them as either tragedies or merely "cute collections of quirky personality traits." As Ellie states, "There are funny parts, but there are maddening parts, and we're not going to avoid those today."
Life Before Diagnosis: A World of Constant Criticism
Before her diagnosis, Ellie describes a life filled with consistent criticism and a pervasive feeling of not fitting in. From childhood, she felt like she couldn't do anything right, constantly receiving negative feedback from both school and family. Her parents, though loving, inadvertently contributed to this by constantly correcting her actions compared to her sisters. Ellie highlights a statistic: neurodivergent individuals experience 20% more criticism than their neurotypical counterparts. This constant critique led her to believe she was lazy, a label frequently reinforced by others. She also initially attributed many of her "quirks" and difficulties to childhood sexual abuse, which she experienced at a young age. However, she realized her experiences didn't quite align with others who had gone through similar trauma, suggesting there was "a lot more stuff going on for me."
