This week, President Trump announced a new oil deal with Venezuela. This comes after a period of strained relations, including the US government ordering the capture of Venezuela's leader and imposing sanctions. The deal involves the US government, through the Pentagon, potentially buying a stake in a Venezuelan oil company, with the Venezuelan government granting exclusive rights for 100 years to extract oil from 17 oil fields. The US would then get a significant portion of this oil for cheap. This complex situation has led many to question what this means for Venezuela and its long-troubled oil industry.

The Paradox of Plenty and the "Can't Live With Them, Can't Live Without Them" Paradox

Venezuela is a country blessed with some of the biggest oil reserves in the world, yet it remains a poor nation with a barely sputtering oil industry. This paradox of plenty is rooted in political instability, American meddling, and corrupt leadership. However, a significant part of this story, and the focus of this episode, revolves around foreign involvement in Venezuela's oil reserves. For the last century, Venezuela has grappled with what can be called the "can't live with them, can't live without them" paradox when it comes to foreign investment in its oil sector.

Jose Angel Pereira Remvek, a third-generation Venezuelan oilman, offers a unique perspective on this dynamic. His grandparents worked in Venezuela's oil industry at its founding, a time when foreigners largely ran the show. His parents were part of the industry's nationalization efforts, and Jose himself has witnessed the ebb and flow of foreign investment throughout his career. He even found his true love, Mervis, while they were both singing in a chorus run by the state oil company.
