The digest
This week on Pardon My Take, Miami Heat forward Max Strus joined the show to discuss his unconventional path to the NBA, the rigorous "Heat culture," and his expectations for the upcoming season. Strus, who went undrafted, shared insights into his journey through the G-League and his eventual success in the league.
Max Strus's Journey to the NBA
Max Strus's path to the NBA was anything but traditional. Undrafted out of college, Strus began his professional career in the G-League, a common route for players looking to make it to the big leagues. He explained that his initial goal was to play professionally overseas, a common aspiration for many talented college players who don't get drafted. However, a turning point came when he transferred to DePaul University, where his focus shifted towards making it to the NBA. "My sights kind of changed, like, alright, I could play in the NBA and make it," Strus recounted (68:28).
His journey was not without its challenges. Strus suffered a torn ACL during his first year with the Chicago Bulls, a significant setback that could have derailed his career. "I was like, well, that might have been my shot," he admitted (68:39). Despite the injury, he persevered, eventually finding his footing with the Miami Heat. Strus described a pivotal moment during a Summer League game where he felt a surge of confidence. "That was like my moment of like, I'm here, I belong, I should be here and I'm gonna be a good player in the league," he said (69:09).
