Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are back, and the Denver Broncos are broken. That's the main takeaway from Week 1 of the NFL season, according to Big Cat and PFT. The Chiefs dominated the Broncos on Monday Night Football, showcasing a powerful run game and a defense that stifled Denver's offense. This performance has many wondering if the Chiefs are poised for another Super Bowl run, especially with Mahomes seemingly getting healthier.
Derek Carr on the Chiefs' Dominance and Broncos' Struggles
Derek Carr, a recurring guest on the podcast, shared his thoughts on the Chiefs' impressive win and the Broncos' struggles. He noted that the Chiefs' run game, which has been absent for a few seasons, was a significant factor in their victory. "We have not seen a run game from the Chiefs like that since maybe what, first year of Kareem Hunt?" Carr said (01:18). He believes that Mahomes not having to be "Superman" every play allows him to get back into form and play his best football at the end of the season. "Him not having to be Superman and having a run game like that, essentially gives him the perfect on-ramp to get back into the flow and be playing his best football at the end of the season," Carr explained (04:30).
Regarding the Broncos, Carr highlighted their poor tackling performance, calling it one of the worst he's ever seen. "Broncos, one of the worst tackling performances, I think ever," Carr stated (03:07). He also expressed concern about Bo Nix's performance, describing it as "bad." "Bo Nix looked bad. Real, real bad," Carr commented (09:57). This raises questions about the Broncos' offensive strategy and whether Sean Payton will need to take back play-calling duties.
