The digest

John Salley, a four-time NBA champion and the first player to win championships in three different decades and two millennia, joined host Joe Shalby on Coffeez Ep. 314 to discuss his extraordinary life. From his early days in Brooklyn to his current ventures in health and wellness, Salley offered insights into his unique philosophy on success, personal growth, and the importance of living authentically.

From Bad Boy to Wellness Guru: A Life of Evolution

Salley's journey began in Brooklyn, where his family instilled in him a strong work ethic and a commitment to always being ready. "My family shaped me more than anything," Salley shared, recalling his brothers' rigorous morning routines that included running a mile and doing push-ups, regardless of weather or circumstances. This discipline, he explained, became a lifelong philosophy: "You don't get ready, you stay ready." This mindset propelled him through a storied NBA career, playing alongside legends like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and Shaquille O'Neal.

Salley's transition from the 'Bad Boys' Pistons to a wellness advocate was a gradual evolution. He initially became a 'lying vegetarian' in 1991, eating meat when his mother cooked it. However, a friend's challenge in 2007 prompted him to fully embrace veganism. This dietary shift, combined with practices like regular IV drips of 'mu cells' (a more potent form of stem cells costing between $8,500 and $10,000 per treatment), has allowed him to maintain peak physical condition. "Getting old sucks," Salley quipped, emphasizing the importance of investing in one's health. He credits his plant-based diet and advanced wellness routines for helping him feel like he's in his 30s, even at 62.
