The digest

Bing West, a distinguished Marine Corps Colonel and former Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, joined Jack Murphy on the Team House podcast to share his extensive experiences and insights. West, a prolific author with numerous works detailing his "boots on the ground" accounts from various war zones, offered a candid perspective on his time in Vietnam, the political leadership during conflicts, and his concerns about America's future.

Early Life and Joining the Marine Corps

Bing West's path to the Marine Corps was deeply influenced by his family. Born in 1940, he humorously noted missing the Civil War and World War I but catching the others. His two uncles, both platoon commanders in the Marine Corps, served in Guadalcanal. When they returned, West, then a toddler, was sent to the attic where they and their fellow Marines would gather. "Between the ages of three and seven, I was raised by Marines," West recounted. These Marines, unable to fully explain their combat experiences to their parents, found solace and an audience in the young West, filling his head with war stories. His mother knew something profound was happening when, during the Battle of Okinawa, West, then a small child, threw his favorite blanket out the window, declaring, "That's for the dirty yellow baskets!" This early immersion fostered a deep-seated connection to the Marine Corps. After college, instead of attending law school as planned, he walked into a Marine Corps recruiting station in Boston and enlisted. "It was ingrained in me," he stated, emphasizing his readiness to serve without being drafted.
