Christa Pike, a Tennessee death row inmate convicted in the brutal 1995 murder of her classmate Colleen Slimmer, recently survived a failed lethal injection execution. This botched attempt has brought renewed attention to the case, but tragically, the focus has largely remained on Pike, with the victim, Colleen, once again being overshadowed.

The Horrific Crime: A Teen Girl's Agonizing Death

Colleen Slimmer's murder was a crime of unimaginable brutality. Pike, along with a co-conspirator, lured Colleen to a remote area of the University of Tennessee campus. There, Colleen was subjected to an agonizing ordeal that lasted for at least 30 minutes, possibly up to an hour. Pike repeatedly hit Colleen's head with her knee, then banged her head on a concrete surface. Colleen begged for her life, promising not to tell anyone and even offering to walk back to Florida if they would just let her go. Her pleas were ignored.

The medical examiner's report detailed at least seven cuts across Colleen's neck, additional cuts on her back, and severe beating and kicking. The fatal blows came from chunks of asphalt, with multiple strikes to her head. The crime scene was described by former Knoxville Police Chief Phil Keith as one of the bloodiest the department had ever seen, with pools of blood indicating a prolonged struggle. Pike's motive, according to her own conjured story, was a love triangle, but there was no evidence to support this. Instead, Pike had told a friend the day before the murder that she "just wanted to be mean."
