The digest
In a recent episode of the Learning Leader Show, host Ryan Hawk sat down with Andy Stanley, founder of North Point Ministries, and Sam Kaufman, Chief Revenue Officer at Insight Global, to discuss enduring leadership principles. The conversation delved into the power of belief, the distinction between problems and tensions, and the critical questions leaders must ask themselves.
The Power of Belief: Mother Mary's Impact
Andy Stanley opened the discussion by sharing a profound story about a woman he affectionately calls "Mother Mary." Mary was a leader in his father's church youth group when Andy and Louie Giglio were troublemakers. Despite their disruptive behavior, Mary saw leadership potential in them. "She said, 'Andy, you and Louie are leaders, and you need to lead. These kids will do what you...' She went on and on about our influence," Stanley recalled. This belief, expressed when he was in the eighth or ninth grade, left a lasting impression, even though he initially thought, "If a leader means you have to behave and do what the adults say, then I don't want to be a leader."
Mary's unwavering faith in their potential, even when they didn't deserve it, shaped their paths. She continually provided opportunities, and both Stanley and Giglio went on to achieve extraordinary things as leaders. Stanley emphasized that Mary "saw what we did not see." This experience taught him the importance of speaking life into others and fanning their flames, especially when they possess that "leadership gear." He believes that leaders are born, not made, and that true leaders naturally attract followers. "I just think they can't help it. They look behind them, and people are following along," he stated.
