Dr. Martin Seligman, often hailed as the "father of positive psychology," joined the Learning Leader Show to delve into the core tenets of his groundbreaking work. Seligman, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania and director of the Positive Psychology Center, has reshaped our understanding of optimism, resilience, and human flourishing. His latest book, "Agency: The Psychological History of Human Progress," explores how psychological variables influence the course of history and can predict future outcomes.
The Power of Social Intelligence
Ryan Hawk began by asking Dr. Seligman about Angela Duckworth, a former student of his and author of "Grit." Seligman spoke highly of Duckworth, calling her one of the best students he's ever had and highlighting her exceptional social intelligence. He noted that while many successful people are smart, what truly distinguishes them is a high degree of social intelligence. "Angela could have been president of the University of Pennsylvania if she wanted to, or I think Secretary of State," Seligman remarked, emphasizing the broad applicability of this trait. He explained that socially intelligent individuals excel at building alliances, getting people on their side, and fostering collaboration. Duckworth, for instance, has had over 50 co-authors in her relatively short career, a testament to her collaborative spirit.
Seligman believes that social intelligence is a crucial skill that should be taught, especially in an era where artificial intelligence levels the playing field in terms of raw knowledge. He described social intelligence as the ability to get people on your side, to assimilate and endorse you, and to follow your work. While he wishes there was a clear roadmap for teaching it, he shared a technique developed by positive sexologists and marital therapists that he considers a top social intelligence technique: learning to celebrate better.
