Angela Duckworth, a professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania and author of the best-selling book "Grit," recently joined Ryan Hawk on the Learning Leader Show to discuss her new book, "Situational: Find the People and Places That Bring Out Your Best." In a wide-ranging conversation, Duckworth challenged conventional wisdom about willpower, emphasized the profound impact of our environment, and highlighted the critical role of mentors in fostering belief.
The Power of Situation: More Than Just Grit
Duckworth began by sharing a harrowing personal anecdote about a snorkeling trip with her elderly mother. Despite her own determination and grit, she quickly realized that in the face of a life-threatening situation, individual effort alone was insufficient. Her mother aspirated water and became unconscious, and it was only by changing the situation—signaling for help and getting assistance from others—that her mother's life was saved. This experience became a powerful metaphor for the central thesis of her new book: our environment, or "situation," is incredibly powerful, and we often underestimate its influence.
Duckworth explained that while her first book, "Grit," focused on the internal drive and perseverance needed for success, "Situational" explores the "outside game" of achieving potential. She dedicated the new book to her mother, acknowledging that her mother's life might have been different if she had been "situated" better. This isn't a renouncement of grit, Duckworth clarified, but rather an expansion. Grit is necessary, but it's not always sufficient. We cannot simply "grit our way" through every adversity; sometimes, we need to change our situation.
