The digest
Annie Elise of Serialously opens the episode by stating that she has no choice but to cover this case, as it's a crossroads between pop culture and true crime. She emphasizes that it's one of the most disturbing cases she's covered, not only because of the current allegations but also due to the extensive background history, patterns, and past allegations. She notes that a lot of information has come out, necessitating a deep dive into the case of KJ Biermann.
Who is KJ Biermann?
Annie Elise explains that KJ Biermann is the 15-year-old son of Kim Zolciak, a reality TV star known for "Real Housewives of Atlanta" and her spin-off show "Don't Be Tardy." Kim Zolciak was married to former NFL player Kroy Biermann, and together they have four biological children: KJ (born 2011), Kash (born 2012), and twins Kaia and Kane (born 2013). Kroy also adopted Kim's two older daughters from a previous relationship, Brielle and Ariana. Annie Elise highlights that their family was initially portrayed as "couple goals" and a "beautiful blended family," with their lives extensively documented on "Don't Be Tardy" for eight seasons, ending in 2020. However, in 2023, Kim and Kroy legally separated and filed for divorce, leading to a bitter and messy legal battle involving financial disputes, bad bodycam footage, smear campaigns, and allegations of Kim misusing Ariana's money. Annie Elise stresses that while this backstory is important context, the focus of the episode is on KJ and his actions.
