Hey True Crime Besties, welcome back to an all-new episode of Serialously with your host, Annie Elise. This week, we're diving deep into a series of cases that have captured headlines, from a disturbing copycat incident mirroring the Lindsay Clancy case to the tragic death of 5-year-old Saylor Hayes, and updates on the legal battles of rapper D4vd and Kim Zolciak's son.
The Ongoing Saga of D4vd (David Anthony Burke)
Annie Elise kicks off the episode with an update on David Anthony Burke, also known as D4vd, who is facing trial for the murder of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas. David's high-profile defense attorney recently dropped him, and he is now being represented by a public defender. This sudden change occurred during his second arraignment on August 31st. Annie Elise notes that the reason for the attorney's withdrawal has not been reported, but the public defender, Walid Kandil, was already in the courtroom, seemingly anticipating the change. Kandil's request to delay the arraignment was denied, and David Burke once again pleaded not guilty to all charges, including murder with special circumstances, sexual assault of a child under 14, and unlawful mutilation of human remains. The special circumstances charges involve lying in wait and witness intimidation.
Annie Elise speculates on why a multi-millionaire rap artist would suddenly be represented by a public defender. She suggests that David might be attempting to hide assets, pointing out that he began moving properties into his mother's name and hiding assets even before his arrest in September 2025. This move, she argues, indicates he was preparing for legal trouble. Celeste's family shares this suspicion, stating that David has tied up his money in different corporations and fraudulently transferred assets to his mother/manager, Colleen Burke. The Public Defender's Office, however, claims that David does qualify for a public defender after a full financial review. Annie Elise finds this suspicious, suggesting that the money may no longer officially belong to him on paper. The prosecution has not yet decided whether to seek the death penalty, and David's next court date is set for October 19th, with a speedy trial expected.
