Sydney Sweeney, the acclaimed actress, recently found herself at the center of a social media storm following her appearance in an advertisement for a sports betting company. The ad, featuring Sweeney in various states of undress while promoting the platform, sparked a heated debate, particularly among women. William Costello, an evolutionary psychologist, joined me to dissect the controversy, offering insights rooted in evolutionary psychology to explain the intense backlash.
The Ad and the Outcry
The advertisement in question was for a sports betting company called Novig Sports Betting. Sweeney, known for her roles in shows like Euphoria, appeared in the ad in a way that many perceived as overtly sexualized. The internet's response was swift and largely predictable, with many accusing Sweeney of setting back women's sports and prostituting herself to the male gaze. Critics pointed to the perceived hypocrisy of some feminists who champion female empowerment and sexual liberation but condemned Sweeney's actions. These critics highlighted that many of the same voices had previously celebrated women who used their sexuality in other contexts, such as in music or art, but were now quick to shame Sweeney.
Costello noted the irony of the situation, stating, "It is me flagrantly putting your legitimate feminist bona fides out there ahead just in case we get shouted out today." He further elaborated on the perceived double standards, observing that many of the people criticizing Sweeney had previously supported women who adopted sexually provocative personas in other industries. The core of the criticism seemed to be that Sweeney was not aligning herself with the perceived feminist agenda, which often emphasizes female solidarity and a rejection of the male gaze.
