The digest
On April 26, 2013, 25-year-old Jessica Heringa vanished from an Exxon gas station in Norton Shores, Michigan, where she was working the late shift. Her disappearance ignited a massive search and a complex investigation that would span years, uncover a web of secrets, and ultimately link her case to another unsolved murder.
The Disappearance: A Quiet Night Turns Ominous
Jessica Heringa was a hardworking young mother, dedicated to her son and often taking extra shifts to make ends meet. On the night of her disappearance, she wasn't even scheduled to work but had covered a shift for a colleague. The last known sighting of Jessica was at 10:52 PM when she sold a cigarette lighter to a customer. Just 15 minutes later, at 11:07 PM, a customer pulled up to the gas station to find the door open and no one inside. The store was undisturbed, with all the money still in the cash register, Jessica's purse, jacket, and even her cigarettes and lighter left behind. Her car was still parked out front, seemingly untouched. The only thing missing was Jessica herself.
Police were immediately alerted, and the Norton Shores Police Department, led by Detective Mike Cash, launched a full-scale investigation. The initial assessment suggested that robbery was not the motive. The lack of any struggle or disturbance in the store, coupled with the untouched cash and personal belongings, pointed to a more sinister and personal abduction. The community of Norton Shores, a small, close-knit beach town on the sunset coast of Lake Michigan, was gripped by fear and uncertainty. Flyers with Jessica's image were distributed far and wide, and vigils were held as the community desperately hoped for her safe return.
