The digest
David Baszucki, CEO of Roblox, believes that fixing yourself first is key to making better decisions. In a wide-ranging conversation, Baszucki shared his personal journey with health, his philosophy on product development, and his approach to leadership, all while offering a glimpse into the future of Roblox and the metaverse.
The Personal Journey: Keto and Mental Health
Baszucki opened up about a deeply personal experience: his son's struggle with bipolar disorder. After years of trying various medications and solutions, a friend in the metabolic health community suggested keto. Baszucki's son, who had been on five medications and was frequently hospitalized, started showing signs of improvement within three weeks of adopting the keto diet. This experience profoundly shifted Baszucki's perspective on mental health, leading him to view it as a "super physical thing" rather than purely psychological. He now sees mental health issues akin to a broken arm, a physical ailment that can be addressed through metabolic health. This personal revelation led to the establishment of a family foundation dedicated to researching the connection between diet and mental health.
Baszucki's current metabolic routine involves avoiding complex carbs that spike glucose levels. He monitors his glucose with a CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitor) and generally consumes a fair amount of protein and fat with minimal carbs, no sugar, and no starch. He believes that a "fasted state" or a state of stable glucose leads to a more alert and focused mindset, which is conducive to making better decisions. He contrasts this with the "slow down, hibernate, sleepy mode" that often follows a high-carb meal.
