Naveen Rao: 4D Computing, AI's Energy Wall & Beating Biology
Naveen Rao, co-founder and CEO of Unconventional AI, discusses the critical energy challenges facing AI and introduces 4D computing as a revolutionary solution, aiming to surpass biological efficiency.
Listen on the show ↗Key takeaways
- 🚀Naveen Rao believes AI is the next evolution of humanity and positions himself as an 'anti-doomer' regarding its future.00:21
- ⚡Google's AI operations alone consume 12 gigawatts of energy per month, processing 3.2 quadrillion tokens, highlighting a massive energy demand.04:53
- 📉At current growth rates, the world's AI demand could outstrip available energy in approximately three years.05:47
- 🧠Biological brains are incredibly energy-efficient; a squirrel's brain runs on 8 milliwatts, capable of complex, precise behaviors.07:49
- 🔄The fundamental inefficiency in current computers stems from moving vast amounts of data (trillions of bits per second) between memory and compute.08:44
- ✂️The concept of 'sparsity' allows for throwing away connections in the system, surprisingly leading to better efficiency, scalability, and performance.14:50

The digest
Naveen Rao, co-founder and CEO of Unconventional AI, shared his vision for the future of AI computing, emphasizing the urgent need for greater energy efficiency and introducing a groundbreaking approach called 4D computing. Rao, a veteran in the deep tech space, including founding the first AI chip company, Nirvana Systems, and leading Intel's AI group, believes that AI is one of the most transformative technologies humanity has ever created.
The AI Optimist and His Journey
Rao describes himself as the "opposite of a doomer" when it comes to AI, viewing it as the next level of human evolution. His journey into AI began early, programming as a child and later pursuing electrical engineering driven by a desire to build intelligent machines. After a successful career in computer building, he returned to academia for a PhD in neuroscience, aiming to understand how to make computers truly intelligent. This quest led him to found Nirvana Systems in 2014, a time when convincing people about the importance of AI chips was a significant challenge. He later sold Nirvana Systems to Intel, where he spearheaded their AI division. In 2020, he started thinking about the next big problem: how to build bigger models and the infrastructure to support them, leading to the platformization of GPUs and the eventual success of his work following the rise of ChatGPT in 2022. This endeavor culminated in joining forces with Databricks in 2023, where his work now accounts for a quarter of Databricks' total revenue.
