The digest
Daniel Ek, the co-founder of Spotify, shares his journey from building one of the world’s largest music streaming platforms to pioneering a new healthcare startup, Neko. With over 700 million active users and 300 million premium subscribers, Spotify transformed the music industry, but Ek’s current focus is on tackling chronic disease and preventive health through data and AI.
The Spotify Origin Story: Disrupting the Music Industry
Ek recalls starting Spotify in 2006 at age 23, in a world before iPhones, Facebook’s global expansion, or YouTube. At the time, music piracy was rampant with platforms like Napster and Kazaa, and the music industry was losing revenue rapidly. Ek and his co-founder Martin Lorentzon envisioned a legal subscription service offering instant access to all the world’s music. Despite skepticism and years of tough negotiations with record labels, they launched Spotify in 2008, first in Sweden, then the UK, and finally the US in 2011. Ek highlights the five years it took to break into the US market as a testament to the challenges they overcame.
