In the bustling city of Marseilles, France, a city notorious for its organized crime and corruption, a series of murders sent shockwaves through the private healthcare industry. Detective Richard Zardoumi, a seasoned veteran of the police force, found himself entangled in a complex web of ambition, betrayal, and unexpected connections.

The First Murder: Léonce Mou

On May 18th, 1988, at 5 PM, Léonce Mou, a 71-year-old hospital director, was gunned down in his car after leaving his medical clinic. The murder weapon was a hunting rifle, and the killers drove away in a getaway car that was later found burned. Zardoumi, with his extensive knowledge of Marseilles' criminal underworld, immediately suspected a gang hit. Léonce Mou, however, didn't fit the typical profile of a gangster. He was a successful and well-respected businessman in the healthcare industry, a field that was becoming increasingly competitive and cutthroat. The media quickly dubbed the incident the "Clinic Wars," speculating about a business feud.

Zardoumi's initial investigation led him to Léonce's daughter, Catherine, a doctor who worked at her father's clinic. Catherine revealed that her father had been under immense pressure from Dr. Jean Chiraqui, a powerful and aggressive competitor who owned many private clinics in Marseilles and was determined to buy Léonce's clinic. Léonce, however, refused to sell, intending to leave the clinic to Catherine upon his retirement. Catherine feared she might be Chiraqui's next target. Zardoumi found Chiraqui to be a strong suspect, given his clear motive and influence, but lacked concrete evidence.
