Cab Trouble: A Vision of What's to Come

The first story, "Cab Trouble," introduces us to Mike Crane, a middle-aged taxi company owner in Boston, Massachusetts, on the night of October 23, 1975. As Mike was closing up shop, he received a call from one of his young, new drivers whose car battery had died on the road. Despite wanting to go home, Mike felt a sense of responsibility and decided to go help, driving a spare taxi cab down a dark side street. As he pulled up to the broken-down cab, he noticed two shady-looking men leaning against an apartment building across the street. Suddenly, Mike, a practical and no-nonsense man, experienced a vivid vision. In this vision, he saw the two men approach his cab, one asking for a cigarette while the other yanked open his door and put a knife to his throat. The vision was so clear and terrifying that a shock of fear coursed through his body. He had never experienced anything like it and didn't even believe in psychic visions, yet he felt with certainty that he had just seen a glimpse of his own fate.

Just as Mike was trying to process this, the two men across the street began walking directly towards him, exactly as he had envisioned. His heart pounded as he realized his cab's hood was still popped, and he was connected to the other cab, unable to drive away. He also couldn't abandon his stranded driver. Then, Mike remembered he had a gun in his briefcase, which he carried for business. Just before the men reached his window, Mike fumbled, pulled out the gun, and positioned it under the window, aiming outside where the men couldn't see it. At that exact moment, one of the men leaned into his window and asked for a cigarette, just like in his vision. The second man was positioned behind him, near the door handle. Mike, convinced the knife was there, raised his gun out of hiding, aimed it at the men, and shouted for them to drop the knife. The men froze in confusion, and Mike briefly wondered if he was overreacting. But then, the second man reached through Mike's window and dropped something into his lap before both men turned and ran away. Once they were gone, Mike, adrenaline coursing through him, picked up the item: a knife. He was shocked that his vision had been so accurate. As he turned the knife over, he saw something that solidified his belief in the vision: his own name, "Mike," scratched into the handle of the knife. To Mike, this was the last of many signs that his vision was real and meant specifically for him.
