The digest
Jean Chatzky, a renowned financial journalist and founder of CEO HerMoney, joined the Young and Profiting podcast to discuss the evolving financial landscape for women. Chatzky, who started her career in journalism and later transitioned to finance after realizing her own financial life "was a bit of a mess," shared her insights on the gender wage gap, the increasing economic power of women, and practical advice for financial success.
The Persistent Gender Wage Gap
Chatzky emphasized that the gender wage gap is still a significant issue. While it has "budged" slightly, with women now earning 83.5 cents for every dollar a white man earns, progress is slow. The American Association of University Women predicts that it will be halfway through the next century before this gap actually closes. Chatzky highlighted that the situation is even "worse for women of color."
This gap, combined with other factors, puts women at a financial disadvantage. Women are more likely to take breaks from work to care for children or elderly parents, leading to less money growing in retirement accounts and fewer social security credits. As a result, women often have a smaller "nest egg" at the end of their careers and need that money to last longer, as they tend to outlive men by six to seven years.
