The digest
Payam Zamani, the visionary founder and CEO of One Planet Group, joined Hala Taha on the "How We Profit" series to share his extraordinary entrepreneurial journey. From escaping war-torn Iran and arriving in the US with just $75, Zamani built a media empire, taking his first company, AutoWeb, public at a staggering $1.2 billion valuation before the age of 30. This episode delves into his unique approach to business, emphasizing profitability, strategic acquisitions, and a philosophy he terms "spiritual capitalism."
The Unconventional Path to Private Equity
Hala kicked off the conversation by acknowledging Zamani's impressive achievements, noting that he's accomplished more than many entrepreneurs do in a lifetime. Zamani, however, has an unconventional view of his own enterprise. He doesn't strictly categorize One Planet Group as a private equity firm, preferring to call it "my company." He manages his own money, without outside investors, and while they own and operate numerous companies, many of them were founded by Zamani himself.
"I don't even know what I'm running if it is private equity, it's my company," Zamani stated, highlighting his hands-on approach. One Planet Group has invested in approximately 45-50 companies to date, operating as a hybrid of a private equity firm, a holding company, and an operating company. Zamani humorously described his business as making sense out of his "chaos," explaining that his company logo, a pale blue dot representing Earth, serves as a reminder to stay focused amidst his diverse ventures, which include making movies and writing books.
