I Have Strong Feelings About Air Conditioning in the Tech House
Linus Tech Tips tackles the challenge of cooling the "Tech House" by installing a mini-split heat pump system, showcasing the process and highlighting its benefits over traditional HVAC.
Watch on YouTube ↗Key takeaways
- 🥵The Tech House gets extremely hot, necessitating a robust cooling solution beyond just insulation due to rising global temperatures.00:09
- ❄️Mini-split heat pump systems offer both heating and cooling with per-zone control, making them a versatile and efficient choice for homes.01:29
- 💧Modern inverter-style evaporators run at lower, continuous outputs, effectively removing humidity and contributing more to comfort than just raw temperature reduction.03:10
- 🚿Proper drainage for condensation is crucial during installation, as mini-split units produce significant amounts of water when cooling.04:21
- 🛠️Mini-split installation can be a surprisingly accessible DIY job for handy individuals, with professionals handling refrigerant charging and final checks.06:29
- 💨Nitrogen gas is used to pre-charge refrigerant lines, preventing moisture from entering the system, which can damage compressors.08:46

The digest
The "Tech House" has a problem: it gets incredibly hot. With summers becoming increasingly sweltering, even with future insulation, the upstairs space would remain uncomfortable. This presented a significant challenge for heating and cooling, prompting a search for the most effective and efficient solution.
Why Not Traditional HVAC?
Initially, several options were considered. The existing ductwork for a gas-fired furnace in the lower level could have been replaced with a heat pump. However, this would have necessitated extending ducting to the upstairs and painstakingly insulating the existing, dilapidated air ducts—a task no one envied. Another thought was to simply use window-mounted AC units, similar to what the previous owner did. While more efficient than floor-standing models, they lack a clean, integrated aesthetic, which was a priority given the ongoing renovations.
