OpenAI's GPT-6 and the AGI Debate

Jason Calacanis kicked off the discussion by announcing the release of OpenAI's GPT-6, also known as Astra. This new flagship model will be available to a limited set of organizations in the coming days, with access granted to those with a credit card linked to their ChatGPT account (i.e., Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users). Greg Brockman, OpenAI's president, believes that OpenAI has entered the AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) era. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, echoed this sentiment at the G20 Summit, stating that "much, much, much more capable models are coming soon" and that the "next generation of models are going to be sobering for everyone." He added, "I think no one intellectually honest can look at what's happening and not feel the weight of responsibility in front of us."

Chamath Palihapitiya agreed with Brockman, stating that AGI has "basically been here since the beginning of the year." He believes that "models that are incredibly performant" exist within closed frontier lab companies and that the focus is now on the right cadence for release. Chamath also predicted that these capabilities would be matched by both closed-source and open-source alternatives within the next three to four months. He emphasized that "incredible intelligence capabilities" will be broadly available, and the cost of that incremental unit of intelligence is "being driven further and further down." He sees the current phase as the "messy middle part of organizing this properly" for companies and individuals, focusing on building useful things and showing actual ROI. David Sacks added that the meta-models are "really good," citing Gemini's recent exceptional release. He highlighted the benefit of having "a lot of choice" and that the "cost of that choice is becoming cheaper and cheaper and cheaper."
