From Architecture to Wall Street: An Unconventional Path
Seth Bernstein's career began with an unexpected detour into architecture. "The original plan was for me to be an architect," Bernstein reveals (2:51). However, he quickly encountered two "immovable objects": a lack of talent and insufficient funds. He also discovered that "no one makes money in architecture" (3:04), a humorous realization that steered him towards finance.
Bernstein's first professional role after graduating from Haverford in 1984 was at Morgan Guaranty Trust Company, a predecessor to JP Morgan Chase. He was fortunate to enter a year-long training program that was willing to train liberal arts majors like himself in accounting, corporate finance, and higher-level math topics. This program was designed to "build bankers and traders" (4:21), a goal that aligned with Bernstein's burgeoning interest in finance.
