At The Money: Considering a Career Change? How About FINFLUENCER?
Tyler Gardner, a former economics teacher and financial advisor, discusses his pivot to becoming a "finfluencer" and offers advice for those considering a career change into the creator economy.
Listen on the show ↗Key takeaways
- 💡The initial inspiration for pivoting from education to finance came from observing that 110 educated adults couldn't understand a basic concept of expense ratios during a TIAA-CREF presentation.3:26
- 😮A major surprise in wealth management was that most high-net-worth clients didn't want to be educated on their wealth; they just wanted the firm to manage it for them, prioritizing convenience over understanding.5:08
- 😂The social media experiment began when Tyler's wife showed him a funny TikTok video about a Roth IRA where the creator didn't actually understand the concept, highlighting a gap for accurate yet engaging financial education.7:34
- 🚧Early on, regulators admitted they didn't know how to regulate social media for financial professionals, leading Tyler's firm to be extremely cautious and focus purely on educational content without specific recommendations.10:54
- 😬Most people who try to become finfluencers go through a 'cringe phase' where they produce terrible content and face ridicule, but perseverance through this is crucial for success.16:48
- 🎯Tyler's content strategy is a 'funnel' approach: short-form videos capture initial attention, then direct audiences to newsletters and podcasts for more nuanced and credible information.21:48

The digest
Tyler Gardner, a former economics teacher and financial advisor, shares his unique journey into the world of financial influencing, or "finfluencing." In a conversation with Barry Ritholtz, Gardner delves into the motivations behind his career pivot, the challenges of navigating social media as a financial educator, and the surprising realities of wealth management.
The Unexpected Path to Finance
Gardner's initial career was in education, teaching economics at a high school in Connecticut. The pivotal moment that steered him towards finance occurred during a faculty meeting where a representative from TIAA-CREF discussed retirement funds. Gardner observed that out of 110 educated adults, not one could grasp the basic concept of an expense ratio. This revelation sparked a desire to combine education with finance, realizing he enjoyed discussing money with colleagues more than teaching semicolons to 15-year-olds.
His transition wasn't about being "pulled out" of education but rather an intentional shift to integrate financial literacy into his teaching passion. He initially became a financial advisor and portfolio manager, working at a small RIA in Vermont. He was drawn to this particular firm because, unlike larger corporate wealth management firms, they valued education. Gardner envisioned himself educating people in his hometown about finance.
