In a recent episode of the Dylan Jamelli Podcast, Dylan hosted Katie Stewart, a registered holistic nutritionist and functional diagnostic nutrition practitioner. Katie specializes in adult acne and has helped over 3,000 clients in 15 countries achieve clear, chronic breakout-free skin. The conversation delved into the often-overlooked internal factors contributing to acne, challenging conventional approaches that primarily focus on topical treatments.
The Birth Control Pill and Hormonal Imbalance
Katie began by addressing a common experience among many women: being prescribed the birth control pill at a young age for issues like acne, painful periods, or missed periods. She highlighted that many, including herself, took it without understanding its true impact on the body. Dylan emphasized that messing with hormones, especially as a teenager, can set one up for "drastic failure."
Katie explained that the birth control pill doesn't actually balance hormones; instead, it acts as a band-aid, suppressing symptoms and creating new hormonal imbalances. When women eventually stop taking the pill, they often face a "whole slew of issues that have been bubbling underneath the surface." The pill impacts the gut microbiome, detoxification organs like the liver, and depletes essential nutrients. This can lead to a cascade of problems, including hormonal acne, as the body struggles to regulate itself after prolonged suppression.
