The Shifting Sands of US-China Competition
The ongoing competition between the United States and China is a pervasive undercurrent in global affairs, impacting geopolitical and economic lines. As another meeting between Trump and Xi approaches, scheduled for September 24th in Washington D.C., the conversation is expected to focus on trade and artificial intelligence, among other economic and political issues. However, the landscape is dynamic, and a lot can shift in a few weeks. The general sentiment is that major announcements are unlikely from this meeting, with the focus potentially shifting to Trump's visit to Shenzhen in mid-November for APEC.
Compared to their last meeting in May, the US appears to be in a weaker geopolitical position. Its Middle East-Iran policy has been mishandled, the upcoming midterms suggest a potential Democratic sweep in the House and Senate, and Trump's relationships with G7 allies, including Europe and Canada, show no signs of improvement. This contrasts with China's increasingly assertive diplomatic presence on the global stage.
