The Alarming Rise of the US National Debt
The US national debt has surged to an unprecedented $40 trillion, a staggering tenfold increase since 1993, while the economy has grown less than fivefold in the same period. This explosion in debt can be traced back to the Bush-Cheney administration, which normalized the idea that "deficits don't matter," leading to tax cuts and wars without corresponding revenue. Since then, an additional $36 to $37 trillion has been added to the debt. The gross debt, including what is owed to outside investors and intragovernmental debt, now stands at approximately 126% of the US economy, approaching levels seen in countries like Japan and Italy. The nation is currently adding $2 trillion to the debt annually, and a significant portion of federal revenue is now dedicated to interest payments on this debt, with almost one in five taxpayer dollars going towards interest rather than essential services.
