Laura Modi, co-founder of Bobbie, joined Guy Raz on the How I Built This podcast to share her remarkable journey of challenging the established giants in the baby formula industry. From navigating a heavily regulated market to building a brand rooted in transparency and community, Modi's story is one of resilience, strategic thinking, and a deep personal connection to her product.
The Personal Spark: A Mother's Struggle
Modi's entrepreneurial journey began not with a business plan, but with a deeply personal struggle. After the birth of her first child in 2016, she faced difficulties with breastfeeding, an experience she found incredibly upsetting and hard to discuss. This led her to the drugstore in search of infant formula, where she noticed a significant gap in the market. Modi envisioned a formula made with organic, grass-fed milk that felt more modern and transparent than the existing options. This personal need ignited the idea for Bobbie.
At the time, Modi was working at Airbnb, having previously built a successful career in tech at Google. She had always harbored an entrepreneurial spirit, brainstorming ideas and even creating mock businesses since childhood. However, she wasn't in a rush, valuing the opportunity to learn from her experiences at these tech giants. The birth of her first child, however, brought a new sense of urgency and a desire to create something better for mothers like herself.
