In this Ask Me Anything (AMA) episode, Peter Attia and his co-host delve into the critical topic of blood pressure. They cover the nuances of measuring blood pressure, the significant health risks associated with hypertension, and the most effective strategies for managing and treating it through both lifestyle interventions and pharmacological approaches.
Understanding Blood Pressure Measurements
Peter begins by explaining what blood pressure measurements actually signify. He clarifies that blood pressure reflects the pressure difference in the arteries as the heart contracts (systole) and relaxes (diastole). The systolic reading represents the pressure when the ventricles are contracting and pumping blood out, while the diastolic reading indicates the pressure when the ventricles are relaxing and filling with blood. Peter emphasizes that when people refer to blood pressure, they are typically discussing systemic blood pressure, not pulmonary blood pressure, which is significantly lower.
He then outlines the current classifications for blood pressure, which were updated following the SPRINT trial in 2015:
- Normal Blood Pressure: Systolic less than 120 mmHg and diastolic less than 80 mmHg.
- Elevated Blood Pressure: Systolic between 120-129 mmHg and diastolic less than 80 mmHg.
- Stage 1 Hypertension: Systolic between 130-139 mmHg or diastolic between 80-89 mmHg.
- Stage 2 Hypertension: Systolic greater than or equal to 140 mmHg or diastolic greater than or equal to 90 mmHg.
