The digest
Andrea Canning introduces Dateline producers Marissa Mayer and Caitlyn Cutt to discuss a variety of true crime stories, including the alleged murder of Stacey Hunsucker, the trial of divorce attorney Gregory Moore, and how the Coast Guard investigates crimes at sea.
The Mysterious Death of Stacey Hunsucker
Marissa Mayer begins by detailing the case of Stacey Hunsucker, a 32-year-old North Carolina preschool teacher who died on September 23, 2018. Her husband, Joshua Hunsucker, a flight paramedic, found her not breathing. Stacey's death was initially attributed to cardiac arrest, and at Joshua's request, no autopsy was performed, and her remains were cremated. Mayer notes that Stacey had a history of health problems, including heart issues, exacerbated since the birth of her first daughter in 2013.
The investigation began when Stacey's mother contacted the North Carolina Department of Insurance, expressing suspicion about the circumstances of her daughter's death. She was particularly concerned that Joshua had received over $200,000 from two life insurance policies belonging to Stacey. Since no autopsy was performed, investigators relied on a preserved blood sample from Stacey, taken because she was an organ donor. This blood sample tested positive for tetrahydrozoline, a chemical found in eye drops, at 30 to 40 times the therapeutic dose. Mayer explains that this chemical can cause severe symptoms, including vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, seizures, and cardiac arrest.
Joshua Hunsucker was arrested in late 2019 and charged with first-degree murder, insurance fraud, and obtaining property by false pretenses. He has pleaded not guilty. His defense team has consistently argued that they would strenuously oppose the allegations, highlighting that Hunsucker had no prior criminal record and was released on bond. A gag order has been imposed on the case, limiting the information attorneys can divulge.
