In November 2009, Joseph McStay, his wife Summer, and their two young sons, Joseph Jr. and Gianni, moved into a large Spanish-style home in a palm-tree-dotted cul-de-sac in the hills of San Diego County. Their new neighborhood in Fallbrook, better known for its avocado orchards than its proximity to the coast, seemed to offer a charmed Southern California life. Home videos from around this time depict an active, fun-loving family, with the boys playing around their new home and the family biking to the beach. However, this idyllic scene was shattered when, in February 2010, the McStay family vanished without a trace.
The Unanswered Call
Joseph McStay, or Joey, had a weekly ritual with his younger brother Michael: a Friday call on his way to play pickup soccer. Michael McStay recounted in a 2011 interview with ABC News that Joseph would always touch base, asking about his business and how things were going. But on Friday, February 5th, 2010, Michael didn't receive that call. Initially, he wasn't alarmed, attributing it to a possible quick vacation. However, as days turned into a week without any contact—no calls, texts, or emails—Michael's concern grew. Joseph's business associates also noted his unusual silence, with customer emails going unanswered, which was uncharacteristic for Joseph, who was usually on top of things.
