Trump Rejects Iran MOU Extension
Andy and DJ kick off the episode discussing the latest news regarding the US and Iran. President Trump has stated that the United States is not seeking a memorandum of understanding (MOU) extension with Iran, even as Brent crude oil tops $91 per barrel. This comes after Trump had previously indicated a desire for a deal with Iran but wouldn't accept key terms. Now, he's asserting that there will be no MOU at all, and he's not in a rush to resolve the situation. DJ notes that peace deals and various attempts to de-escalate have been tried before, but nothing seems to be working.
Oil prices have continued to rise, especially with the Strait of Hormuz being closed off. A lot of contention remains in the region. Today, a director of security in Iran tweeted a message, highlighting the gap between America's inability to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and its claim to own it. The tweet stated, "The gap between America's inability to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and its claim to own it is greater than the 7,000-mile distance between Washington and the strait itself. Welcome to the post-American order in the Persian Gulf. 7,000 miles from Washington. Some dreams are too far from reality." Shortly after this, Iran fired two ballistic missiles towards the UAE, with one hitting its target and the other falling into the Gulf.
Andy observes that many Americans are now feeling a sense of endless conflict, reminiscent of the first year of 2020. He points out that this is the third time in his lifetime he's witnessed such a scenario, referring to Desert Storm and post-9/11 Afghanistan. Andy believes that people his age (in their 40s) are under no illusions that this time will be different. He argues that this age group is particularly frustrated because they understand the cyclical nature of these conflicts and what comes next: nothing good.
