In a world obsessed with growth, Yarin Gaon, a fractional partner and growth strategist, offers a counterintuitive yet highly effective approach: growth by subtraction. Gaon, who started his first SaaS company at 14 and later built a successful e-commerce platform in Israel, shares his insights on how businesses can achieve sustainable profitability by focusing on what truly matters. He emphasizes that the idea is just the starting point; the real work lies in turning that idea into something customers can find, trust, and buy from.
The Genesis of an Entrepreneur: From Child Prodigy to Military E-commerce
Ryan Alford kicks off the conversation by acknowledging Gaon's impressive journey, highlighting his early start in entrepreneurship. Gaon recounts how he began his first SaaS company at the tender age of 14, followed by another at 16. His father, an accountant and entrepreneur, fostered an environment that enabled him to pursue these ventures, even helping him open a bank account for transactions. This early exposure, combined with an "interesting problem" and "a lot of spare time," ignited his passion for business.
After his initial ventures, Gaon served three years in the Israeli military, a mandatory service for all citizens. This experience proved to be a pivotal moment, as it exposed him to two significant problems. First, the army didn't provide enough equipment for soldiers, leading to a thriving secondary market where parents would shop for their kids. Second, due to Shabbat, everything was closed on Saturdays, leaving soldiers with a very short window to purchase necessary gear. Gaon saw an opportunity to create an e-commerce platform that would allow soldiers to buy military goods online and have them shipped to their base. This led to the creation of the largest e-commerce platform for military goods in Israel.
