Journalist John Talty, author of the new book "Lane Being Lane: The Story of Lane Kiffin, College Football's Agent of Chaos," joined The Dan Le Batard Show to discuss the enigmatic coach. Talty, a college sports reporter for CBS Sports and a former Alabama beat writer, offered an in-depth look into Kiffin's career, his personal life, and the various controversies that have followed him.
The Legend of Joey Freshwater
The conversation began with the intriguing origin of the "Joey Freshwater" alias, a detail that gained significant traction after Talty's excerpt in Vanity Fair. Talty explained that he had covered Alabama for years for AL.com and had heard whispers of this story even then. "I had always had it kind of as something a little bit of a white whale, frankly, to try to get to the bottom of this," Talty said. The opportunity to fully investigate came with writing his book. He spoke to numerous individuals who were present during Kiffin's time at Alabama, including people who worked at Innisfree, a bar Kiffin frequented. The allure of the story, Talty noted, was how perfectly it encapsulated Kiffin's persona: "It's just a hilarious name, and just the idea of Lane Kiffin, who at the time was one of the most famous people in the state of Alabama, even just as an offensive coordinator, that he would try to actually tell people his name is Joey Freshwater is just perfectly Lane Kiffin."
Dan Le Batard pressed for more details, asking if there was more to the story. Talty revealed an anecdote not included in the book because he learned it after submission: the Joey Freshwater nickname originated from a college friend of Kiffin's who used it on a fake ID. Kiffin apparently found it so amusing that he decided to adopt it himself one day. Talty emphasized that while the specific origin was new, the general behavior was consistent with Kiffin's character. He noted that similar "off-the-field shenanigans" have followed Kiffin throughout his career at Oakland, Tennessee, and Oxford, suggesting a pattern of behavior that Talty found surprising in its totality.
