Entrepreneur Magazine Editor-in-Chief Jason Feifer discusses the importance of building a personal brand, the power of saying "yes" to new opportunities, and how to effectively scale a home service business.
Listen on the show ↗Key takeaways
- 💡Being 'singular' in your career, by owning a specific problem and articulating unique ideas, is more valuable than being 'interchangeable' through expertise alone.00:50
- 🚀Push yourself beyond what's 'accessible' (easy options) to what's 'available' (everything you could do but nobody's asking you to do) to find massive growth opportunities.04:18
- 🧠Entrepreneurship is fundamentally about problem-solving and deeply understanding people's internal and external problems, not just business tactics.07:26
- 🤔If you literally can't do anything else, then entrepreneurship might be for you; otherwise, carefully consider your 'why' before diving in.10:12
- 🍽️Businesses often 'die of indigestion' by taking on too many things, rather than 'starvation' from a lack of opportunities.26:29
- 📢Traditional press is no longer the 'need to have' it once was for broad reach; focus on building owned channels and direct community engagement.41:38

The digest
Tommy Mello, host of "The Home Service Expert" podcast, recently sat down with Jason Feifer, Editor-in-Chief of Entrepreneur Magazine, to discuss the critical elements of building a thriving business in today's dynamic landscape. Their conversation spanned topics from personal branding and adaptability to the nuances of entrepreneurship and the strategic use of media.
From Small-Town Reporter to Editor-in-Chief: The Power of Singularity
Feifer began by recounting his early career as a small-town newspaper reporter in North Central Massachusetts. He described feeling frustrated and unnoticed, despite doing good work. This frustration led him to a profound realization: the world offers two ways to exist professionally – you can be interchangeable or singular. "If you're interchangeable, then you have the same skill sets as so many other people, your value is low because you're a commodity," Feifer explained. "If you're singular, you're seen as the single person who can solve that problem, who can do that thing. Your value is high because there's a scarcity for you." He initially believed that being a good writer and editor would make him stand out, but he learned that expertise alone isn't enough. What truly makes someone singular, he discovered, is owning a problem that people specifically turn to you to solve, and articulating unique ideas in a way that resonates and becomes associated with you. Feifer emphasized the importance of "ownable language" – turning ideas into catchy, repeatable phrases that people associate with you. This allows people to view their problems through your unique lens, making you the owner of the solution.
