Michael Batnick and Ben Carlson welcomed Brandon Clark, ETF Business Director at Federated Hermes, to the Animal Spirits podcast to discuss the current landscape of income investing. The conversation delved into investor behavior, the changing yield curve, and how ETFs are transforming the income-generating strategies available to advisors and clients.
The Peril of Comfort: Why Investors Are Missing Opportunities
Ben Carlson kicked off the discussion by highlighting a critical observation: investors are currently too focused on income and not enough on potential shifts in the economic and market environment. He noted that many investors have become comfortable with cash, especially in a rising rate environment, and are overlooking the long-term implications. "My read on the situation is that investors are thinking too much about income and not enough about what might happen if the economic and market environment shifts," Carlson stated. He pointed out that while current cash yields are attractive, investors might miss out if the Federal Reserve lowers rates, causing bond prices to rise. Michael Batnick agreed, suggesting that if someone had predicted a 10-year Treasury yield of 4.7% or a 30-year yield of 5.3% six or seven years ago, everyone would have locked it in. Now, with those rates a reality, people are hesitant, fearing even higher rates. This behavior, he argued, stems from a desire to "catch the top" or "catch the bottom" of the market.
