The digest
In a world saturated with likes, comments, and constant feedback, it's easy to lose touch with our inner voice. Jay Shetty, in this insightful podcast episode, argues that most of us don't have a confidence problem, but rather a validation problem. We've become so accustomed to being measured and evaluated by the outside world that we've forgotten how to internally measure ourselves. This reliance on external approval, Shetty contends, is a terrible foundation for building an internal identity.
The Validation Problem: Why We Seek External Approval
Shetty highlights a fundamental shift in our thinking: we've stopped asking "What do I think?" and started asking "What does everyone else think?" This manifests in everyday actions, from reading 100 reviews before buying a couch to seeking approval from friends before wearing an outfit. We're constantly waiting for someone else to tell us "it's okay" before we allow ourselves to move forward. This isn't surprising, given that we live in a world that provides an unprecedented amount of feedback, from social media metrics to performance reviews at work and grades at school. Our brains, designed for survival within a tribe, interpret social rejection as a threat, leading us to prioritize approval over our own perceptions.
Shetty references a famous experiment in social psychology conducted by Solomon Asch in the 1950s. Participants were asked to match the length of lines, a seemingly simple task. However, when actors in the room intentionally gave the wrong answer, many participants abandoned what they could clearly see with their own eyes and agreed with the group instead. This demonstrates our innate tendency to trust consensus more than our own perception, a behavior that, while once crucial for survival, now hinders our ability to trust ourselves.
