The digest
On Tuesday, September 8th, Daily Wire executive editor John Bickley and Daily Wire culture reporter Megan Basham joined Morning Wire to discuss the Republican National Convention, the UK's immigration crisis, and a new proposal to incentivize stay-at-home parents.
The Republican National Convention
Bickley began by discussing the Republican National Convention, which is kicking off in Dallas. He noted that the convention is a first-of-its-kind national convention, and that the list of scheduled speakers was just released. Bickley believes that the convention is a signal that the Republican Party understands that they are "starting off behind." He explained that there has been a lot of "fractious disagreement" in the Republican Party in Washington D.C. of late. However, he expects to see "a wall-to-wall series of Republicans who are going to come out, they are going to try to send their message nationally." He added that it remains to be seen "how much it actually resonates and how much of it actually breaks through, given that this is an event where, you know, you don't have a convention that's actually nominating someone, you just have essentially a gathering of these different politicians together to make the case that they should be sent back to Washington."
Bickley also commented on the morale within the Republican Party, stating that it is "actually pretty good considering where they were a couple of months ago." He attributed this to a "very positive jobs number" and a feeling of confidence in the economy. He also mentioned that the situation in the Strait of Hormuz has been resolved, which contributes to a more optimistic outlook. However, he noted that the Republicans haven't found a message until most recently with the idea that they're going to lead into "Democratic extremism across the board." He specifically mentioned the Michigan Senate race as one that "nationalized this conversation about the rise of the DSA." He questioned whether this message will resonate with voters, as it will require politicians to "develop a new skill that they haven't shown to this point." He also pointed out that many Republicans haven't made a solid case to be sent back to Washington, and they will be running in districts that have been redrawn or adjusted.
