The digest
Today's episode of The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz opened with a heartfelt discussion about the recent passing of country music icon Dolly Parton. Greg Cody shared his perspective on how he processes celebrity deaths, particularly those of figures like Parton, emphasizing a focus on celebrating their lives and legacies rather than dwelling on sadness.
Celebrating Dolly's Legacy
Dan Le Batard initiated the conversation, noting that Dolly Parton passed away yesterday. Greg Cody immediately expressed his thoughts on such events: "These type of like celebrity deaths are always interesting to me because you'll get the news yesterday that Dolly Parton passed away, iconic, obviously. But we'll get the news that Dolly Parton passed away and people will be really sad, you know. And I think it's always a nice occasion to hear all the great things that this person did, you know. Like she was 80 years old. She lived a really full, great life." Le Batard echoed this sentiment, stating, "I usually take the attitude of celebrating in that spot as opposed to being sad. And I really enjoyed yesterday hearing and reading all of the tributes and it's a reminder of all the things that they did throughout their life, the great things, the philanthropic things, and the kind of person that they were." He highlighted the overwhelming positivity in the stories shared, describing Parton as "just the sweetest woman."
Greg Cody further elaborated on his personal connection to Parton's career, mentioning her collaboration with Kenny Rogers on "Islands in the Stream," which he considers "one of the great songs." He shared a humorous anecdote about how he informed his wife of Parton's passing: "I always judge a celebrity's death by how my wife and I interact on the news. And I heard it a little bit before she did. And when I heard it, I texted my wife and said, 'Oh my gosh, Dolly Parton just died.'" The use of "gosh" instead of a stronger expletive became a running gag, with Cody insisting it was fitting for the moment.
