The digest

Andrew Sharp and Ben Thompson kick off this episode of Sharp Tech by diving straight into the recent release of OpenAI's Astra and the broader implications of AGI's arrival. Thompson, having just completed a server rack setup, humorously notes the immediate shift to serious topics, highlighting the rapid pace of developments in the AI space.

The AGI Era and the Importance of Writing Things Down

Thompson begins by addressing the core theme of his recent article: the importance and value of agents writing things down. He notes that both OpenAI's Greg Brockman and Nvidia's Jensen Huang have declared the arrival of the AGI era. Thompson emphasizes that this isn't just about AI systems performing tasks, but about their ability to record and build upon information, a concept he's been stressing for weeks.

He explains that he's always felt a tension in writing for Stratechery, balancing free front-page articles with daily updates for subscribers. The latter assumes a certain familiarity with his work and the tech industry. However, for broader articles, he has to consider a wider audience, including those unfamiliar with tech. This gap, he argues, has always felt large, but with recent AI advancements, it has become "astronomical." He illustrates this with a personal anecdote about trying to explain "GekkoBot" to a neighbor, highlighting the difficulty of bridging the knowledge gap even in everyday conversations.

Thompson reveals that this tension applies to his own work as well. He's developed many unique systems in his life, such as his approach to working from home, which he initially wasn't sure were relevant to others. However, the principles he's applied, particularly those related to managing information, have proven universally valuable. He's a strong believer in doubling down on strengths and minimizing time spent on weaknesses. While weaknesses should be ameliorated to prevent hindrance, obsessing over them for self-improvement is often a waste of time, as one is unlikely to achieve more than average in those areas. Instead, he advocates for leveraging strengths, which in his case, involves absorbing information and making connections.
