The digest
Naveen Rao, co-founder and CEO of Unconventional AI, a startup focused on AI chip technology, recently shared his vision for the future of AI, emphasizing the urgent need for energy-efficient computing. Rao, known for building and selling two deep tech companies, describes himself as an "anti-doomer" when it comes to AI, viewing it as one of humanity's most transformative technologies. He believes AI will enable the next level of evolution, and his work at Unconventional AI is dedicated to making this future sustainable.
A Journey from Electrical Engineering to Neuroscience and AI
Rao's journey into AI began early, programming as a child and later pursuing electrical engineering driven by a fascination with sci-fi and the desire to create intelligent machines. After a career in building computers, he returned to school for a PhD in neuroscience, aiming to understand how to make computers intelligent. This led him to found Nirvana Systems in 2014, the first AI chip company. At the time, AI was not in common vernacular, and convincing people of its importance was challenging. Nirvana Systems was later acquired by Intel, where Rao led the AI group.
In 2020, Rao started thinking about the next big problem: building bigger models like the large language models prevalent today. This led to platformizing GPUs and scaling infrastructure to support these models. After the rise of ChatGPT in 2022, his company became a go-to for building AI models, eventually joining forces with Databricks in 2023. This venture now accounts for a quarter of Databricks' total revenue.
