The digest
Jennifer and Angie open the episode by discussing Donald Trump's laser focus on putting his name on the Kennedy Center. Trump believes that because his administration would get involved and raise money to carry it, they should certainly have recognition. He claims the Kennedy Center is in very bad, dangerous shape and will close if he doesn't intervene. Angie counters that Trump thinks everything is his and that he wants it to be about him. She reminds listeners that the Kennedy Center was not built for him, but for the legacy of John F. Kennedy, the president. She states that Trump doesn't accept or respect that, nor does he respect history. He thinks history started with him and will end with him. Angie finds this incredibly "gross" and points out that Trump isn't talking about funding renovations with his own personal money. Instead, he's saying, "Taxpayer money, and I want my fucking name on it." She believes he knows that the minute he's out of office, everything he's "absolutely shit all over" will have his name removed. Jennifer isn't sure Trump's brain is capable of thinking that far ahead, describing him as "so narcissistic" and surrounded by "so many sycophants."
Distractions and Deeper Conspiracies
Jennifer believes that many of Trump's actions, like focusing on the reflecting pool, the gold, the ballroom, and the Kennedy Center, are "great distractions" that people sink their teeth into. She calls them "bright, shiny objects" that dominate the news cycle. Meanwhile, she believes Trump is compromised by Vladimir Putin and Benjamin Netanyahu, and that the exposed crimes only scratch the surface. She thinks Trump puts out these "little things" as "catnip," and the press bites on them, leading to discussions about how incompetent or stupid he is. Jennifer admits that while the optics are good for Trump, she doesn't care if his name is on the Kennedy Center. She challenges him to "swing for the fences, big guy, do it! Pop it up there!" She suggests that if he thinks he can fundraise for it and be a big advocate for the arts, then "great," but she doesn't "give a shit." She feels that the media's focus on these distractions is a disservice, as they all participate in this "catnip."
