The digest
Dina Powell McCormick, a trailblazing leader in government, business, and philanthropy, recently joined Meta Platforms as President and Vice Chairwoman. In a recent discussion, she shed light on Meta's massive AI expansion, including data centers, investments, and global partnerships. McCormick, along with Superintendent Sheldon Clark and Louisiana Commerce Secretary Susan B. Campbell, made a compelling case for the positive impact of data centers, particularly in communities that are often overlooked.
The Economic Transformation of Richland Parish
Superintendent Sheldon Clark opened the discussion by describing Richland Parish, Louisiana, as a place that opportunity had forgotten. He recounted how many people, including his own son, had moved away looking for work. The prevailing sentiment was, "There's nothing here for us anymore." However, the arrival of Meta's data center brought a transformative shift. Clark highlighted the significant investment Meta made in the community, which led to an immediate increase in sales tax collections. The Richland Parish School Board, which collects 51% of the taxes for the district, saw its sales tax collections jump from a normal 5-10% to an astonishing 60-70%. This surge peaked at about 260% and directly impacted teacher salaries. In December 2025, a one-half cent sales tax check doubled from the previous year, and by June, certified employees received an increase of about $40,000, with some receiving up to $50,000. This translated to a net increase of approximately $45,000 for teachers, fundamentally changing the economic landscape and offering hope for the future of students who now have opportunities to stay in their hometown.
