The digest
Mary Kathleen Rodriguez, a 26-year-old woman working as a live-in nanny in West Odessa, Texas, was found brutally murdered in December 1990. Her case, initially investigated by then-Lieutenant Carl Rogers, has been plagued by unanswered questions and suspicious circumstances for over three decades. This episode of The Deck delves into the details of Kathleen's life, the immediate aftermath of her death, and the perplexing investigation that followed.
The Discovery of Kathleen's Body
Kathleen, known to her loved ones as "Kathleen," grew up in Pampa, Texas. Her mother, Mary Ellen Rodriguez, described her as a sensitive child who loved being around kids and cooking. Kathleen started nannying around age 18, working for two families before moving in with Edda and Eddie Bryant. The Bryants were the last people to see Kathleen alive. On Sunday, December 30, 1990, Kathleen's boyfriend, Billy Vincent, became concerned after not hearing from her for a couple of days. Unable to reach her by phone, he drove to the Bryants' rental house on the 1000 block of Clendenen Avenue. When no one answered, he contacted Edda Bryant, who was visiting her mother in Sweetwater, Texas. Edda gave Billy permission to climb through an unlocked back window to check on Kathleen. Billy discovered Kathleen's body lying face down on the bed in the middle bedroom. The scene was in disarray, with an overturned end table, scattered clothing, and an electric iron on the floor. A large pool of blood surrounded Kathleen's head on the mattress, indicating a violent struggle.
