Seeking the Blessing of a Son

One of the most common and deeply personal desires expressed by callers is the wish for a male child. Sudha from Punjab, a 35-year-old mother of two daughters, shared her longing for a son. Gurudev identified that both Sudha and her husband were afflicted by the doshas of Surya (Sun) and Brihaspati (Jupiter). To remedy this, he prescribed a series of rituals. On the second Thursday of the Shukla Paksha, a new bronze bowl or pot is to be filled with chana dal (split chickpeas), covered with a bright yellow cloth, and tied with a yellow thread. This is to be placed at the home altar on a yellow cloth, with a swastika drawn on the pot using turmeric by the ring finger of the right hand. Both husband and wife are instructed to offer water to the Sun daily. A specific 22-day ritual, starting on a Sunday, involves offering water to the Sun in a copper pot containing 222 red chili seeds, while chanting the mantra "Om Surya Devaya Vidmahe Pitru Rupaya Dhimahi Tanno Surya Prachodayat." Additionally, before sleeping, a piece of mishri (rock sugar) and a small cardamom should be held in the right hand, a fist closed, and after sitting in the bedroom, the mantra "Ibnu Ibnu Ibnu" should be chanted before consuming them as prasad. Weekly donations of Petha sweets, red sandalwood, and wheat to the temple on Sundays, along with offering bel patra, red flowers, water, and bel fruit to the Shiva Lingam, are also recommended. A strict injunction against consuming or serving alcohol and engaging in gossip or excessive show-off is given, as these actions can negate the positive effects of the remedies. Gurudev assured that with diligent practice, the blessing of a son would soon be realized.
