Many of us have certain expectations for how we think our lives will turn out. We often get down on ourselves for not reaching certain dreams or milestones by the time we wanted them done. Jay Shetty argues that the biggest thing holding us back isn't our past, but the future we thought we'd have. When we were younger, we likely had a clear picture in our minds of what our lives would look like by now. Maybe we imagined being married, having children, securing a dream job, owning a house, or simply feeling like we had everything figured out. Somewhere along the way, we started writing a blueprint for our future.

When Life Happens

Life, however, often has other plans. Some parts of that blueprint may have come true, but others didn't. We might find ourselves in a career we never expected, living somewhere we never planned, or healing from a relationship we thought would last forever. We might wonder why everyone else seems to be moving through life while we feel stuck. Without even noticing it, we begin comparing the life we're living to the life we thought we'd be living. This comparison can be incredibly painful. We spend so much time comparing ourselves to others that we overlook an even more common comparison: the one between who we are today and who we expected to be by now.

Sometimes, the person we're competing with isn't an influencer on Instagram or a recently promoted coworker. Sometimes, it's the 20-year-old version of ourselves who confidently believed they knew exactly how life was going to unfold. We measure our real lives against an imaginary one, and reality almost always loses to that comparison. Shetty emphasizes that we need to let go of the expectation of what we thought our life would be. He believes there are five key ideas we need to understand to make peace with this, which he will explore in this episode.
